Gender and decentralization in Jordan, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen

Description : The project "Gender and decentralization in the MENA region" financed by the Forum of Federations consists at the implementation of a report on gender and decentralization in four countries of the MENA region: Jordan, Tunisia, Yemen and, Libya. By assessing the inclusion of gender in each concerned country in the processes of decentralization implemented, the aim is to highlight both shortcomings and progresses through a comparison with international best practices.​

MEDITER – Women for Change

Status : Completed
Project partners : “ IRIS” ( Pescara /Italy) ; GRAIF ”Groupementrégional pour l’Action et l’Information des Femmes”(Marseille/France) ; Safadi Foundation(Tripoli/Lebanon) ; CAWTAR (Center of Arab Women for Training and Research).

Objectives : The project aims to reinforce women´s leadership at the local level through increasing women´s capacities and competences to access to decision-making in order to be involved in the local and regional development.

Components : Research, training and networking are the main components of the project.

Achievements:

• A research on the profile of female leaders at the local level;
• The synthesis of the four researches implemented on the same topic in the four concerned countries;
• The participation of eight Tunisian women to the 1st training session on”Strategic planning and leadership skills”in Tripoli ( April 2011);
• The organization of the 2nd training session on “Project proposals to the European Union: conception, budgeting…” targeting 28 women from the four countries in Tunis (June 2011) ;
• Contribution to the building of a new network”Mediter women network” to reinforce women’s leadership at the local level.

Promote gender and support emerging civil society organizations to play an effective role in democratic transition in the Arab region

Status : Completed
Description : This project aims to build up the capacities of both already and newly established actors and voices (CSOs and individuals) to better integrate gender and women and human rights in the democratic transition.

The main objectives are :

Raise awareness of stakeholders about Gender in the democratic transition process by:

• Organizing public roundtables to debate on democratic transition and related issues, including citizenship, the role of media and CSOs in democratic transition, the place of gender and human rights in democratic transition…
• Organizing policy oriented roundtables to advocate for integrating gender in the democratic transition (including writing policy documents).

Support and reinforce the emerging Civil Society organizations by:

• Organizing training workshops for the NGOs founders and members to integrate gender and Human rights in their activities and improve their knowledge on developing and implementing projects;
• Support drafting and funding NGOs projects and activities related to democratic transition (promoting and anchoring Gender and human rights and other topics related to democratic transition);
• Providing technical assistance upon request of the network’s members and organizing series of meetings to facilitate the cooperation in addressing the challenges during the democratic transition.

Reinforce networking and sharing knowledge between NGOs from the region by:

• Supporting the participation of NGOs members in regional meetings to promote exchange of expertise and share good practices (consultation meetings);
• Developing a portal for grantees: the network will facilitate the information sharing between the sub-grantees and encourage joint programming among them as well as facilitating their cooperation with other actors at local, national, regional and global levels;
• Editing a newsletter on grantees activities, learned lessons, success stories, good practices….;

Women’s Political Participation in the MENA region – An awareness raising package

Description : Women’s participation in politics is central to democratic governance. It is now almost universally recognised that if the world’s new and established democracies are to be truly democratic, half of the world’s population cannot be excluded.

Most studies on women in politics concentrate mainly on their representation in Parliament and on the quotas used to expand such participation. However, the issue of women in politics encompasses a much broader spectrum of themes

Description : The Professional Fellows Program between Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and the U.S.aims to empower the participants to become more active and successful in their spheres of work by providing opportunities to gain new knowledge and experience through fellowships with the host country's public and private institutions, companies and organizations in similar areas of work, networking and cultural experiences. The program promote mutual understanding and lasting partnerships between US professionals and organizations and their counterparts in the MENA region.​
